Australia Post has opened a new parcel facility in Adelaide to assist with the ongoing uplift in online orders.

The $31.4 million facility will aid the delivery service in the lead up to the busiest Christmas season on record. The FC covers more than 15,000 square metres, making it the largest operation for Australia Post in South Australia.

In the last few months, online orders have skyrocketed. Last December was the largest on record, with 52 million parcels delivered across the country. Australia Post is now preparing for similar circumstances – in September, parcel volumes grew seven percent YoY in South Australia.

“We had more than 344,000 South Australian households shopping online in September, and we know how busy the festive season can be after last year’s record-breaking Christmas,” said Rob Clothier, the Head of Operations for South Australia at Australia Post. “This new facility will help us get those high volumes of parcels moving quickly and to people’s doors faster than ever before.”

The new facility features Australian-first machinery, which is able to simultaneously sort out large and small parcels.  This gives it the capacity to process over 8,000 parcels every hour, roughly calculating 170,000 a day.
