Elliot Midalia, Co-Managing Director at Boody talks Chipotle, Adam Sandler movies, and how to ensure meetings aren't time wasters.

When was the first time you shopped online?

Mid 2000’s, I was a big eBay fan!

What was your first job?

My Dad had a chain of retail Pharmacies growing up so I was working the cash registers there as soon as I was legally allowed to.

What’s your most-used App on your phone?

It’s a tie between WhatsApp, Gmail App, and Insight Timer (my meditation app).

What is one professional habit that you are very particular about?

Meeting hygiene: shared background and agendas, right people in the meeting, no wasted time, clear accountable next steps.

If you weren’t in ecommerce, what industry would you like to work in?

I love the QSR space (Quick Service Restaurants). I’ve wanted to bring Chipotle to Australia since trying it whilst on exchange in the US in 2010!

What takes up too much of your time?

Personally, probably Twitter, although I gain some really interesting learnings and insights from it. Professionally, like most people I’d have to say meetings but every time we review the meetings schedule, they turn out to be necessary and valuable.

What did you wantto be when you were five years old?

No recollection of wanting to be anything but present and having fun back then. It wasn’t too many years after that I wanted to be Adam Sandler in whatever movie I got to watch him in.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Divide the year in three: New York / Sydney / [Insert non-touristy Greek island]

What is one of your guilty pleasures?

Seeing a movie by myself paired with some form of burger and fries.

Whatis one thing that can instantly make your day better?

An afternoon meditation, a work out, seeing my dog.

How do you typically unwind after a long day?

Depends what day of the week, but if it’s really been a day – tequila on the rocks.

What’s your favourite ad on TV right now?

N/A… who watches ad-based TV anymore?!

Are you usually early or late to events?

Historically early. Since marriage, not so early.

What is one skill you would love to master?

Whistle with one hand.

If you had the opportunity to take an international gap year and do whatever you wanted, where would you move and what would you do?

Food tour throughout all of Asia.

Say you’re stranded on a desert island (and all basics are met), what are three things you would take with you?

  • Boody undies – it’s a given
  • iPhone – necessary evil
  • My orthopedic neck pillow/ear plugs/eye mask – still need healthy sleep on a stranded island!

If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Greek salad!

If you had a time machine, where would you time travelto, and why?

New York in the roaring twenties. It seemed prosperous and fun, without the knowledge of what was to come in the world.

What’s something everyone should try at least once?

Moving to another major city for a period of time. It’s a huge life unlock.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

I don’t see myself as an expert in any one thing but I can certainly talk for a while about consumer technology and ecommerce.
