We spoke with New Balance Ecommerce Manager for ANZ, Maddy Baxter-Smith about her first job, the importance of staying grounded in the present, and the rewards that come with climbing volcanos.

When was the first time you shopped online?

In my early teens, and it was definitely some kind of make up!

What was your first job?

Dusting shelves at our local family chemist for $6 an hour. LOL.

What’s your most-used App on your phone?

It would have to be TikTok or Instagram.

What is one professional habit that you are very particular about?

Planning. As they say, ‘Fail to plan, plain to fail.’

If you weren’t in ecommerce, what industry would you like to work in?

I was torn between studying Business or Nursing & Midwifery at uni. So I would have to say Nursing & Midwifery – I love kids!

What takes up too much of your time?

Cleaning the house! I hate it.

What did you want to be when you were five years old?

A beautician.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Sorrento, Victoria. I love the Mornington Peninsula.

What is one of your guilty pleasures?

My current guilty pleasure is Vanderpump Rules!

What is one thing that can instantly make your day better?

A good takeaway coffee!

How do you typically unwind after a long day?

With a glass of red wine and a scroll on my phone.

What’s your favourite ad on TV right now?

I have really been loving Airbnb’s ads of late.

Are you usually early or late to events?

I am always right on time.

What is one skill you would love to master?

Running! It’s such a mental challenge.

If you had the opportunity to take an international gap year and do whatever you wanted, where would you move and what would you do?

I would move to Bali and play it by ear.

Say you’re stranded on a desert island (and all basics are met), what are three things you would take with you?

It would have to be my partner, Margaritas and, I hate to say it, but my phone.

If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

This is a tough one – anything Mexican!

If you had a time machine, where would you time travel to, and why?

I wouldn’t, the past is the past. I stay focused on the present & the future.

What’s something everyone should try at least once?

Climb a Volcano. I climbed Mt Batur when in Bali a few years ago, and it was amazing. The journey to the top was challenging, but once up there you’re rewarded with breath-taking views and the feeling of accomplishment.

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

How to enter the Amazon FBA market and sell successfully. Over the last 3 months I have been completing a course here and all I can say is Amazon is very powerful.
