Amazon Australia has released its 2018 Trends Report, revealing its most popular products from the last 12-months, as well as some of its biggest milestones.

According to the online giant, nostalgic toys and video games, wellness, fashion and beauty goods, and the business’s new pet supplies range have been among the bestselling items on Amazon Australia since its December 2017 launch.

“Since launch, we have grown our selection to almost 100 million products across 29 categories, including six new ones with Pantry Food & Drinks, Pet Supplies, Automotive, Luggage, TVs and Jewellery recently launching,” Rocco Braeuniger, the country manager for Amazon Australia said in the report.

With 10,000 active Australian sellers on its platform, consumers have reportedly been taking advantage of Amazon’s broader product range, with Nintendo selling more products on the platform than any other brand in 2018. According to the report, “the 90s are back with a vengeance”, with Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger and Levi’s all finding success on the platform with sales of logo t-shirts, denim jackets and branded hoodies all coming in as some of the most popular fashion items on the site. LEGO has also remained a staple in Australian households, coming in as one of the top 10 bestselling brands on Amazon Australia in 2018.

“It seems the country has been swept up by all things retro, from Mario to denim jackets to LEGO – who doesn’t love embracing their inner child?” Braeuniger said.

When it comes to entertainment, half of the Blu-rays sold via Amazon are superhero blockbusters, with most products being purchased in 4K Ultra HD. The Christopher Nolan Collection, Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War all made it into the top 10.

Amazon has also been taking advantage of the booming health and wellness industry in Australia, with sales of cashew nuts and green tea taking off, while Lorna Jane and Puma have been dominating the platform for the sale of sneakers and bathers.

Australians also spend an estimated $12.2 billion on pet products and services annually, with Amazon’s new pet supplies range seeing a spike in the number of Schmackos, Fancy Feast and Supercoat products sold on the marketplace.

Amazon predicts bestselling toys for Christmas 2018.

The online platform also says that toys related to Star Wars, The Incredibles and Harry Potter will all be high on kids’ wish lists this year, with the report predicting that Fur Real’s ‘Munchin Rex’ will take out the top toy spot over the busy festive season.

It’s been a busy 12-months for Amazon in Australia, with the business launching its Fulfilment by Amazon program, its Prime membership and holding its first Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. Despite having a reputation for putting small retailers out of business, the company has also taken steps to assist local creators, launching its Amazon Fashion 2018 Local Brand Award in November, and adding a number of sellers including the likes of Zen Green Tea Matcha, Orbitkey and Queensland-based start-up, Audeara to its platform.

“It’s been a big year and we’re only just getting started… it’s always day one at Amazon and we’re excited to continue to grow our store and invent on behalf of the Australian shoppers and to see what the New Year brings,” Braeuniger said.
