Amazon Exits Google Shopping: What It Means for Retailers

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Amazon has exited from Google Shopping, a move that may open the door for rivals to gain visibility and share.

In a huge shakeup for the retail media landscape, Amazon has fully withdrawn from Google Shopping. After gradually scaling back over the past year, the ecommerce giant has removed all Google Shopping ads globally in the past week.

Josh Duggan, co-founder of ecommerce and paid media consultancy Vervaunt, revealed on LinkedIn that Amazon has been absent from Google Shopping since last Tuesday afternoon.

“Of the approximate 13 million daily impressions the company tracks,” Duggan said, “Amazon typically appears in about 30 percent of shopping results, so the sudden disappearance is notable.”

This isn’t Amazon’s first retreat from Google’s advertising products. In 2018, Bloomberg reported that the company halted bidding on high-revenue Shopping placements, highlighting a growing divide between the two tech giants. It was reported at the time that Amazon was spending over $50 million USD on the placements.

That earlier pullback was widely viewed as Amazon doubling down on its own advertising channels, a strategy that now appears to be repeating on a larger scale.

Market observers noted that Amazon had already cut its Shopping ad spend in the US by 50 percent during May 2025, indicating that this recent move was part of a broader strategy rather than a reactive decision.

Amazon pulling out of Google Shopping opens up a big opportunity for other retailers. With one of the largest and most competitive advertisers out of the mix, the rest could see lower cost-per-clicks, more visibility, and better click-through rates.

It’s unclear at this point whether this move is permanent or a temporary measure.
