Amazon Australia will be investing $490 million in the development of two new fulfilment centres in Sydney.

Amazon Australia has announced plans to create over 1000 local jobs in Western Sydney with a $490 million investment in two new fulfilment centres in Horsely Park by early 2026.

Amazon Australia launched its first Australian fulfilment centre back in 2017. These new additions will bring the total fulfilment centres in the country to twelve (including Amazon Robotics but not including additional sort centres and delivery stations.)

Construction of the site has began, which is set to generate up to 3500 jobs in itself. The first fulfilment centre is a fit-out of an existing 33,400 sqm building, which will have the capacity to hold up to 600,000 larger items, expected to open later this year.

The more ambitious half of the project is a purpose-built fulfilment centre, which will be around four and a half times the size of the Opera House (80,000 square metres) and has capacity to hold up to 1.6 million large items sold on Amazon.com.au. This is expected to open by early 2026.

The Premier of New South Wales, The Hon. Chris Minns MP says, “The opening of these two brand new fulfilment centres in Horsley Park will be responsible for thousands of jobs in construction and over a thousand more jobs once operational – this is much needed capital investment from Amazon and we’re thrilled it is taking place in Western Sydney. This corner of Sydney will be one of the most exciting additions to job creation and economic development in the entire country.”

According to Amazon, both of the new fulfilment centres will be equipped with advanced technology to assist Amazon’s team as they pick and pack items. These two additional sites will expand the capacity available to the Australian sellers who use Fulfilment by Amazon, enabling those with larger items to more seamlessly service customers around the country.

Once fully operational the two facilities are expected to create over 1,000 local jobs, ranging from entry level roles with on-the-job training, to skilled roles in areas such as Operations, HR, Engineering and Workplace Health and Safety.

Sandra McNeil, Amazon Australia Operations Manager, says “Amazon Australia’s investment in two new facilities in Western Sydney will expand our operational footprint in this area which will provide customers with wider selection and faster delivery. We are committed to improving selection and delivery speed as demand continues to grow, as well as being dedicated to giving back to the communities in which we operate. We are proud to be able to provide more local job opportunities and look forward to working with the NSW Government to continue our investment in the Western Sydney area.”
