Amazon Opens the Doors of Its Brand-New Sydney Fulfilment Centre

Amazon Australia has opened the doors of its second fulfilment centre, a Sydney branch with a footprint of 43,000 square metres.

Continuing its expansion into the Australian market, major e-commerce retailer Amazon has today opened the doors of a new fulfilment centre in Moorebank, South West Sydney.

Robert Bruce, Amazon Director of Operations, calls this “an exciting milestone for Amazon in Australia”. The company established its first Australian fulfilment centre just last year, opening the doors in Dandenong South in December 2017. This Melbourne centre was just the beginning; the newly opened Sydney centre is the second instalment in a locally based fulfilment centre network that will increase product selection and shipping speed in Australia, crucial elements of stabilising Amazon’s foothold in the country.

“The Sydney facility in Moorebank will help Amazon ensure that customers enjoy fast and reliable delivery across more areas of the country,” said Bruce. “The new Sydney centre builds on the capabilities of our first fulfilment centre in Dandenong South in Victoria, and expands our ability to service the growing customer demand.”

The company expects that its new centre will affect not only customers but also those who sell to them. Small and medium-sized local businesses that use Fulfilment by Amazon will be eligible for the recently launched subscription service Prime, increasing their access to Amazon’s enormous customer base.

The centre represents new job opportunities offline as well, and Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller appears confident that this move will have a positive effect on the local economy. “We look forward to having good jobs for people close to where they live and working with Amazon as a partner in the local community,” she said. “We expect the Sydney fulfilment centre will become a key logistics hub.”

Double the size of its Melbourne counterpart, Sydney’s fulfilment centre has a footprint of 43,000 square metres. To give a sense of scale, Amazon points out that this is the size of six football fields. Close to Sydney’s airport, ports, and M5 motorway, the centre is in a key location that Mayor Waller terms a “strategic position”.

This opening follows the recent news that Amazon Australia posted a $9 million loss for 2017. Between these financial results and an unenthusiastic welcome last year, the company’s Australia expansion has gotten off to an uncertain start. By opening the doors on a second and much larger fulfilment centre, however, Amazon Australia seems confident that it will continue to grow.
