How Amazon Prime Performed in 2018
Amazon Prime hit some new milestones in 2018, with the online goliath claiming worldwide adoption of its loyalty program is at an all-time high and orders are being fulfiled in as little as eight minutes.
The last 12-months have been fruitful for Amazon on a global scale, with the company saying Prime members ordered two billion products across its shopping network, taking advantage of fast shipping speeds with delivery estimated to take one-day or less. The marketplace also says it added more Prime members to its database over the last 12-months than it has ever before, partly due to the release of Amazon Prime in Australia, which also brought the number of countries with access to the loyalty program to 17.
Fastest Delivery Times
Of particular note is the fastest delivery times recorded for Prime members in the last 12-months, with a shopper in Berkeley, CA reportedly receiving their Hartz Home Protection Lavender Scent Odor-Eliminating Gel Dog Pads within eight minutes, while a customer in Kirkland, WA received their Nintendo SNES Classic in just nine minutes.
According to Amazon, its Prime membership has been built on the foundation of fast, free shipping, with consumers in 8,000 cities and towns having access to free same-day delivery, while 30 major cities have access to free two-hour delivery, and access to unlimited access to free two-day shipping on 100 million items in 17 countries.
Top Products
The bestselling product among Prime members in the US in 2018 was the Fire Stick with Alexa Voice Remote followed closely by the Echo Dot. The Echo Dot was also particularly popular during peak gift-giving times, coming in as the most popular product in the week before Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and the number one item across Amazon’s global network during the Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend.
Other favourites were the Panasonic ErgoFit In-Ear Earbuds Headphones, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 9 Instant Camera and the Umbra Trigg Hanging Planter Vase.
The online marketplace also recorded strong sales from Prime members across its pet and children’s toy categories, with the Chuckit! Ultra Dog Ball and Nerf N-Strike Elite Strongarm Blaster ranking among the bestselling items on the platform in 2018.
Top Streaming
According to Amazon, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was the most awarded program on Prime Video, while Jack Ryan and Homecoming were the most binge-watched shows. On Prime Music, Justin Timberlake took out the top spot as the most streamed artist, while the Black Panther comic-to-movie adaptation was the most popular title on Prime Reading. Half of the top read books on Prime Reading were reportedly mystery novels, while the top five titles included Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, The Handmaid’s Tale, Milk and Honey, and Say You’re Sorry.
Looking at Twitch Prime, Amazon says that members accessed more than 50 million free games across the world with a Prime membership, downloading a total of 55 million pieces of in-game loot and content across 17 games, including League of Legends and Overwatch.
Amazon Prime now has a reported 100 million paid members in countries across the world.
