5.3 Million Aussies to Shop Online on Christmas Day
While most Aussies will be busy stuffing their faces and unwrapping presents on Christmas Day, a staggering 5.3 million people will be jumping online to take advantage of early Boxing Day sales.
New research from finder.com.au has revealed that 48 percent of Generation Z plan to spend big on Christmas Day, while only one in 10 (nine percent) of Baby Boomers plan to jump online in search of a bargain.
The survey of more than 2,000 Australians has also revealed that 29 percent of men and 27 percent of women plan to shop, spending as much as $5.8 million before the shops re-open on Boxing Day.
According to Bessie Hassan, the money expert at finder.com.au, hundreds of retailers are already starting to offer post-Christmas discounts, with marketing efforts set to ramp up in the final few days of the festive season.
“Consumers will be bombarded by marketing emails well and truly before Boxing Day with some irresistible deals available from Christmas morning, and even the week leading up to Christmas” she said.
“While some Aussies can’t wait to see what’s under the tree on December 25, a surprising number can’t wait to see what sales have kicked off.
“Between unwrapping presents and throwing a shrimp on the BBQ Aussies will be stealing away moments to shop the pick of the sales.”
While all retail categories are expected to make sales on Christmas Day, appliances, clothing and homewares are expected to be the biggest sellers of the day, with finder.com.au predicting online sales on the day will reach new records. Hassan even says that the growing popularity of online shopping on Christmas Day could impact the number of consumers flocking to the shops on Boxing Day.
“Although in-store is still king, with more than half of Aussies heading to their local store to shop the sale, online shopping is on the rise,” she said.
“We also expect Internet transactions to hit a record high on December 25.”
Although, not everyone is looking to make the most of the last of the sales season, with 21 percent of shoppers reportedly saying they aren’t interested in Boxing Day sales.
