According to the National Retail Association (NRA), online retailers are set to make a pretty penny in the final 10 days before Christmas.
In the latest Christmas trade figures from the NRA, Australian retailers are projected to make another $17.8 billion this festive season, with $1.07 billion of that spending expected to go towards the e-commerce sector.
“The days leading up to Christmas are incredibly busy ones for all parts of the retail sector, with shoppers descending on stores for everything from purchasing last-minute presents to picking out what to eat with the family on Christmas Day itself,” Dominique Lamb, the NRA’s CEO said in a statement.
“More than one-third of sales during the Christmas trade period will occur in the final 10 days before Santa rides his sleigh into town, so you can expect to see retail stores across the country packed to the rafters with shoppers,” she continued.
However, as online stores offer guaranteed delivery in time for Christmas as the big day creeps closer and closer, Lamb also says that e-tailer’s will be able to take a slice of the pre-Christmas sales pie. In Australia, pureplay online retailers are expected to generate $387 million in sales over the next week, while cross-channel players are expected to rake in $683 million through their digital channels.
While retailers like ASOS, Boohoo and Priceline are cutting off orders for guaranteed Christmas delivery by December 14, others are offering longer order periods. For instance, General Pants is offering delivery in time for Christmas for orders made up until December 21, GlamCorner until the 20th, and Showpo until the 21st.
Earlier projections by the NRA had indicated that over the festive season, consumers would spend roughly $50 billion on food and presents over November and December.
