Iconic Australia clothing brand Country Road this year celebrates its 50th birthday with five decades of history unveiled.
Launched in 1974, Country Road began with a simple idea—to create quality clothing designed for an Australian way of life. In naming the company, Founder Stephen Bennett looked to Australia’s roots. Acknowledging the practical farming inspired functionality of its design, its use of natural fibres and the traditional owner’s connection to the land, he says “the brand had the feel of country and the road was looking ahead.”
Country Road Group encompasses fellow Australian brands Mimco, Trenery, Politix, and Witchery.
Country Road is committed to embedding sustainability into its business by improving traceability through its supply chain and a variety of sustainability actions including working with responsible suppliers. In late 2022, Country Road additionally announced the launch of the Country Road Climate Fund, investing $1.5 million in grant funding to projects driving climate solutions in the Australian fashion industry over the following three years to help accelerate and incubate projects, programs, initiatives or products across the Australian fashion industry.
The Climate Fund acknowledges that climate outcomes can be achieved through nature-based solutions, the circular economy, innovative solutions or First Nations-led practices.
The golden anniversary of the brand is celebrated with a new campaign featuring Australian model Gemma Ward by renowned photographer Graham Shearer from iconic brand campaigns in the 1980s, a new logo and identity for 50 years, designed by Melbourne typographer Andrew Woodhead. The company will also be bringing back archives to select stores with history of Country Road favourites to also rejoice in online, and product drops exclusive to 50-year celebration across its ranges. Speaking to the milestone, Country Road managing director, Elle Roseby said, “As we celebrate 50 years of Country Road, it’s a special occasion for reflection and gratitude. The past five decades have been a testament to the enduring spirit of our brand, and as we look forward, we are excited to not only continue weaving the essence of Australia into every thread but to also strengthen our bonds within the communities that have been an integral part of our story.”
