E-COMMERCE TIME MACHINE: Harvey Norman
Far from the infamous comments about the inability to make money online, Harvey Norman's e-commerce offering has come a long way. Let's take a look at Harvey Norman's online journey from 1996 to today in the e-commerce time machine.
In 2008, Gerry Harvey famously said “Online people do not make any money.” He even took it one step further, canning the industry entirely: “The whole world was conned with online retailing,” he shared.
Three years later, in 2011, he told News Corp that the Harvey Norman business would be online ‘within weeks’.
“My heart’s beating very strongly on whether we make any money out of it,” he told News Ltd at the time. “I haven’t got any choice. I’ve got to cannibalise our stores.”
We have come a long way since those fateful and now-infamous comments, so we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the Harvey Norman e-commerce journey, from the mid-’90s until today. How much has changed? Are there developments needed for further growth?
