HOUSE Opens First UK Store

Originally founded in Australia, HOUSE has taken its kitchenware offerings global, as it expands into the UK multichannel market.

HOUSE and its parent company, Global Retail Brands has launched its UK presence by opening its first shop front at Westgate in Oxford. The new store opening also coincided with the launch of the HouseUK.com online store.

In March this year, HOUSE announced it would be opening four UK stores by the end of April and a further two by the end of June.

“I am proud and delighted that we have successfully opened our first two stores on schedule,” HOUSE’s Executive Chairman and CEO, Steven Lew says.

Two of these will open in the next couple of weeks, with one located at The Lexicon in Bracknell and the other at Meadowhall, Sheffield. The stores at Chapelfield, Norwich and Cribbs Causeway are expected to follow shortly after.

Lew is confident the brand will be able to roll out the openings of the rest of its UK stores swiftly, bringing its passion for cooking, dining, and entertaining to a new market.

“Our expansion will be very much opportunity-led, and our strategy is to create a sustainable operation that prioritises being best-in-class, over being the biggest. Being the biggest is a flow on from having the best all-round offering,” says Lew.

The new store openings and online shop launch is part of HOUSE’s plan to open 75 physical stores in the UK, a move that’s expected to create 1,000 jobs over the next three years.

“Physical stores are not dead. They are only dead if the retailer cannot adapt its model, and landlords and business partners are not willing to work together in their mutual best interests. The approach must be collaborative, holistic and realistic,” he says.

So far, response to HOUSE’s UK expansion has been reported as positive, with Nick Symons, a partner at UK-based property consultant firm, MMX Retail, claiming consumer response to the new store was overwhelming.

“We also had some of the UK’s leading landlords and their advisers in store today, and their response to House UK was tremendous. We are now looking to progress negotiations for another batch of store openings for later in the summer,” says Symons.

HOUSE is one of a number of Australian retailers to branch into the international market over the past few years, with Budgy Smuggler also launching an e-commerce store and London pop-up in June last year and Australian fashion brand, Homebodii announcing its partnership with international retailer, Nordstrom just last week.
