Inspiring Inclusivity with Taeressa Fawthrop

Team Global Express Chief Consumer Officer Taeressa Fawthrop sits down with Power Retail to share her advice for women looking to expand their careers.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

IWD has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people.

Today, we continue the tradition and celebrate the achievements of women across the globe. In this IWD special podcast developed in partnership with Team Global Express, we are highlighting the career of Taeressa Fawthrop, Chief Consumer Officer at Team Global Express.

Power Retail sat down with Taeressa Fawthrop to discuss her journey and her advice for women looking to expand their career paths.

An important step, Taeressa says is stepping out of your comfort zone.

“I think when I think about women and women starting their careers, it’s really important to consider options that are presented to you at different points in time. For the first 10 years of my career, I did consciously step out of my comfort zone and take on parts of an operating model that potentially I had no experience in.”

Taeressa’s philosophy is believing in yourself, and making sure you’ve got people around you who are also believing in you. 

“If that self-belief is higher than your doubt, you’re gonna do fine,” she told Power Retail.

The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day Campaign is Inspiring Inclusion. When people are included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment.

Taeressa knows first hand how inclusion and empowerment can lead to opportunities.

“Truly believing in yourself and your capability is what will set you free to opportunities. The logistics business is yes, predominantly a male dominated environment, but we’ve got to remember as women as we forge our ways with our careers, that diversity is really important for different thinking.

“Without the women on our CEO leadership team, I’m not sure we would have as broad a thinking in the sense of the diversity we need to face into some of the opportunities that we have for the future. So I kind of think, step back from the industry and think about how your value proposition as an individual can actually make a difference.

“I can’t see myself leaving logistics, because I actually think the value that I can contribute in a really meaningful way to not only e-commerce, but businesses of Australia and New Zealand and across the world, that opportunity is phenomenal. 

“The industry needs diversity of thinking. It needs to enable and empower women within this industry to do well. And we need it to do well. So I’m a big supporter of women in logistics and I would encourage anyone to consider industries that they might not have thought that they could add a lot of value in.”

The official International Women’s Day campaign suggests a variety of actions a business can take on an organisational or group basis to Inspire Inclusivity and ensure the needs, interests and aspirations of women and girls are valued and included. Such as:

  • forging women’s economic empowerment
  • recruiting, retaining and developing female talent
  • supporting women and girls into leadership, decision-making, business and STEM
  • designing and building infrastructure meeting the needs of women and girls
  • helping women and girls make informed decisions about their health
  • involving women and girls in sustainable agriculture and food security
  • providing women and girls with access to quality education and training
  • promoting creative and artistic talent of women and girls
  • addressing further areas supporting the advancement of women and girls
