Workplace escapism just became easier, with search engine KAYAK launching a desktop travel app based on its research into peak booking times.
Travel metasearch engine KAYAK has just launched a free desktop app designed to encourage impulse buys among users thinking of booking a holiday. Inspiring holiday pictures are already a staple feature of computer backgrounds, and Desktop Escape taps into this by linking images to KAYAK’s flight search functionality.
Users’ desktop backgrounds will cycle through photos from over 90 destinations, with an ‘Escape’ button strategically placed to take them to a corresponding flight search results page when an image catches their interest.
Robin Chiang, Country Head of Australia and New Zealand at KAYAK, says the app aims to “provide travel inspiration, helping make a dream ‘escape’ into a reality.”
The app launches alongside results KAYAK has released regarding its peak booking times and popular locations. “Our data shows that Aussies are not shy about planning their travel from work, with more than half of people making bookings during working hours,” says Chiang.
The results show that 56% of the site’s Australian travellers planned their trips between 9am and 6pm on weekdays, with the peak time for travel searches being 2pm. Since people are already browsing and booking holidays from the office, KAYAK has opted to make the process simpler for them, targeting its focus on an existing market.
The results also reveal the most popular destinations booked during these work hours. In Australia overall, the top five locations were Bali, London, Sydney, Melbourne, and Los Angeles. Sydney’s top destinations were London, Melbourne, Bali, Los Angeles, and Tokyo; Melbourne’s favourites were Bali, London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Delhi.
KAYAK, a subsidiary of Booking Holdings, is a search engine and fare aggregator that operates across several platforms, including Amazon Alexa and Facebook Messenger. It links users up to third-party travel providers, so this move represents a potential increase in business for other areas of the travel industry.
