40 Million Parcels Delivered Amidst Online Boom

Australia Post says it has recorded its biggest ever month for parcel volumes, delivering more than 40 million packages in December.

The Government-owned postal authority said in a statement on Monday afternoon that Australians are embracing online shopping like never before, with its research revealing 19.2 percent more items were purchased online over Christmas than in previous years.

“We made more than 40 million parcel deliveries in December,” said Australia Post’s Chief Operating Officer, Bob Black. Over the month, December 17 was reportedly its “biggest day” with the business delivering three million parcels across the country.

Parcel delivery didn’t slow down as Christmas crept closer either, with the company’s second busiest day of the year falling on December 24.

“What we didn’t expect was to have a lot of shoppers race to the finish line to post their festive parcels, with our people delivering a whopping 2.7 million items on Christmas Eve – our next busiest day of the month and equal second busiest day in history,” Black said.

“Online shopping is building momentum as a channel of choice, where customers can make the most of online deals and choose customisable delivery options,” he continued.

The Shifting Market

When the Australian Bureau of Statistics released better-than-expected results for November, online shopping was identified as a key impact of the shift in consumer habits in the lead up to the festive season.

Overall, online sales contributed to 6.6 percent of total retail revenue in November 2018, up from 5.5 percent in November 2017, and from 5.9 percent in the previous month. This represents the highest ever-recorded level in the series by the ABS. The bureau also noted that strong online performance in November continues to be a pattern within the industry, as consumers are actively looking to grab a bargain long before December’s all-important shopping period begins.

This comes as the industry awaits December’s retail turnover results next month, with Morgan Stanley analysts predicting a soft Christmas trading period for non-food bricks-and-mortar retailers.
