Shopify BFCM Sales Reach Record Breaking $9.3B USD Globally

Shopify merchant data reveals record breaking Black Friday and Cyber Monday highlights globally and in Australia.

Shopify has shared its BFCM data from its over 2 million merchants across the globe. 61 million consumers made a purchase from a Shopify merchant during Black Friday and Cyber Monday this year, generating a 24 percent increase in sales from 2022. 

In Australia, the number of shoppers purchasing from Shopify merchants has grown by 16 percent over the BFCM weekend in 2022.

Over 100,000 merchants in Australia are powered by Shopify, and its data shows Aussie shoppers got in early with Black Friday’s peak selling hour at 10am AEST on November 24. Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane were the top selling cities. AOV was slightly under the global average at $162 AUD. Aussie shoppers reflect the global trend of preferring mobile shopping, with 72 percent of shoppers checking out on their phones, and 28 percent on their computer or laptops, slightly higher than the global average. The top five product categories show Apparel & Accessories was the number one category shopped, followed by Health & Beauty, Home & Garden, Food & Beverages, and Electronics.

Australia ranked third globally for total sales, behind the US and UK. Australian retailer HiSmile Toothpaste, also made the global top 10 products sold over BFCM weekend. 

According to Shopify’s merchant data, the US, UK and Canada topped the ranks of top selling countries globally. Peak sales reached $4.2 Million on Black Friday at 12:01 PM EST. Average Cart Prices were $108.12 USD, or around $170 AUD. Devices used while shopping showed a heavy preference for mobile shopping, with 74 percent of shoppers using their phones to checkout globally, and just 26 percent on desktop.

Shopify President Harley Finkelstein said “Another epic, record-breaking Black Friday in the books for Shopify merchants. The world showed up for our merchants.”

The platform also shared some additionally impressive data including that over 6,000 tonnes of carbon removal was funded to counteract emissions from the delivery of every order placed on Shopify’s platform during Black Friday Cyber Monday weekend. 17,500 entrepreneurs made their first sale on Shopify, and around 55,000 merchants had their highest-selling day ever on Shopify.
