Amazon has announced the Australian release of the Echo Spot; with insiders claiming the device will once again change the way consumers are browsing online.

The newest member of the Echo family, Amazon’s Echo Spot is now available for pre-order in Australia as of today, and for purchase on 26 April 2018.

“Echo Spot combines the popular small design of Echo Dot, with the added benefit of a display and the features you love about Alexa, into a stylish and compact device,” says Alexa Australia and New Zealand’s Country Manager, Sylvia Ding. “See the weather, watch video news briefings, glance at your alarm clock, make video calls, and more—we think customers in Australia will find lots of places for Echo Spot in their homes.”

The latest addition to Amazon’s suite of Alexa products is also reported to sport a range of features that will make browsing online easier, including far field and acoustic beam-forming technology, enhanced noise cancellation, and a front-facing camera.

At the 2017 annual Internet Retailer Conference, Ken Cassar, the principal analyst with mobile and e-commerce researcher, Slice Intelligence told attendees “new input devices will be the driver of this new commerce.”

This statement appears to be holding true, as big e-commerce players like eBay are reporting as many as 3,000 voice requests made within single half-hour periods during peak shopping times.

The release of Amazon’s new voice-activated smart home device is the latest in a long line of voice technology that’s been revolutionising the way consumers shop online. Just last year, eBay and Google partnered up to allow users of Google’s home devices to easily shop on eBay by using phrases like, ‘Ask eBay’ or ‘Talk to eBay’. Officeworks also made a similar deal with Google Assistant to allow shoppers to easily find products online using voice-activated searches on their smart devices.

Technology and e-commerce companies have been quick to take advantage of the Australian market, after home speaker assistant sales have continued to soar in larger markets, such as the US.

The Amazon Echo Spot will be available for purchase at the end of this month, with prices starting at $199 (RRP). According to the e-commerce giant, a selection of Australian retailers, including JB Hi-fi, Officeworks, and Myer, will also have the opportunity to sell the Echo Spot direct to consumers.
