Airbnb has managed to land former Amazon Vice President of Prime Worldwide, Greg Greeley. How will this impact Prime's momentum? It's a move everyone in the industry will be watching with bated breath.

Amazon’s Vice President of Prime Worldwide, Greg Greeley, is leaving the company after 18 years to join Airbnb. He announced on LinkedIn earlier this week that he would be leaving Amazon to “take on a different challenge”.

“It was Jeff Bezos’ heartfelt 1997 Letter to Shareholders that ultimately drew me to Amazon,” he wrote, “and I have not regretted that decision for even a nanosecond. That letter described a unique approach for a public company, and the vision it contained was even more powerful than I fully understood at the time.”

“With a relentless focus on customers and eight clearly defined long-term principles, it has been the foundation for a phenomenal business  and I truly believe, even now, it is still Day 1,” he continued. “Those who have read that letter know it speaks of employees joining with the desire to build something that matters to customers, something we can tell our grandchildren about. That has certainly been the case for me, and is still the case for those joining today.”

Greeley was Amazon when Prime membership was first launched in 2005 (amid much skepticism about the model!). It has been reported that Prime has over 90 million users in the US alone and shipped over 5 billion items via Prime in 2017. Greeley was most recently working with the Prime and Whole Foods integration which has been far from plain sailing.

He will be joining Airbnb as its President of Homes, heading up one of the company’s four business units. Airbnb said that Greeley was picked for his experience in creating “one of the most loved membership programs in the world.” It will be interesting to see the impact of Greeley’s exit on Prime and which direction his leadership will take Airbnb.
