Independent outdoor gear retailer, Wild Earth Australia has officially become a B Corp Certified Company.

Wild Earth notes this certification is a significant milestone in its mission to protect the outdoors, build community and work towards a more sustainable future.

Wild Earth was founded on a deep passion for the outdoors and a commitment to sustainability and has long been at the forefront of eco-friendly business practices. “To achieve our purpose, our decisions and actions must be made in consideration of our people and recognising the need to foster strong relationships with suppliers, customers, and others who support us,” states Wild Earth CEO Chris Somerville.

A B Corp Certification is a designation that a business is meeting high standards of verified performance, accountability, and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving to supply chain practices and input materials. The social sustainability and performance standard is a holistic certification process that requires verification across many different levels in a business. Conferred by B Lab, a global non-profit, companies must receive a minimum score of 80 from the assessment of their performance, must integrate B Corp commitments into their mission, and pay an annual fee based on annual sales. While holding no legal status, the process is rigorous and the certification holds enormous social capital as well as holding companies accountable for their impact.

A B Corp Certification is measured across a series of actions including Climate Action, Circular Design, Responsible Sourcing and Social Impact.

Companies must document their positive impact to apply using the B Impact Assessment tool, and undergo an independent verification process every three years to achieve and maintain certification.

Wild Earth’s Burleigh HQ and Warehouse are powered by solar panels, it implements innovative recycling programs and prioritises responsibly sourced suppliers. Also key to achieving B Corp certification were Wild Earth Australia’s sustainable practices and community partnerships notably with Rainforest Rescue Australia and their carbon offset program with Klean which allows customers to choose from four different carbon offsetting projects verified by Tasman Environmental Markets, all meeting the Australian Government’s Climate Active Carbon Neutral Standard.

“By achieving B Corp certification, we are actively contributing to a global movement of businesses that prioritise people and the planet,” reads Wild Earth’s website. “From responsibly sourced materials to eco-friendly packaging, we are consciously making decisions to align with our mission to respect our environment. Our B Corp certification does not mean the journey is over – it is just starting. We will continue to explore innovative ways to expand and improve our sustainability initiatives and inspire outdoor enthusiasts to make a positive impact through their adventures.”
